The Foundation students eagerly boarded the bus for their first school excursion. Excitement abounded as seats were chosen, swimming bags were clutched on laps and we made our way to PARC for water safety lessons. The students were grouped in ability levels and practiced many survival skills. They enjoyed wearing life jackets in the big pool, making waves with kickboards, floating and safely entering the pool. The students were excited, and a little hesitant, to wear their clothes in the pool during the second session. Once again, they practiced several life-saving skills including getting undressed in the water. All of the students had a wonderful time and are a little wiser around the water.

On June 5 the Year 9s visited Mount Eliza Secondary College to attend the annual Careers Expo. The hall was filled with stalls of future possibilities for us from Universities to Trades to Services all the opportunities we could imagine for our future. It was interesting to talk to different experts in their area about what is involved in the careers that they offer. It was interesting to see how you could study in different fields such as studying through the Defence Force. Going to the Careers Expo was a really worthwhile day. We all learned a lot as it opened our eyes to what we can do in the future.

As part of our continued professional learning in Mathematics in the Primary School, we once again invited Mathematics Consultant, Michael Ymer, to work with our team to explore the latest methods of teaching and learning in this area. Michael modeled exemplary lessons to both the Foundation classes as well as to Year One, Three and Four, covering topics such as division, subtraction, fractions, decimal fraction and collecting and using data. During the Foundation lessons, parents were also invited to watch what a 21st century maths lesson looks like. Michael was able to discuss with the parents how they can support their child at home. The two biggest messages that were emphasized were ‘don’t push your child too fast’ and the idea that we want our children to be numerate, that is, how we choose and use the mathematical skills we have to solve problems in life.
