Sustainability

Food, Health and Sustainability

Balcombe Grammar School is committed to ensuring that our students understand the importance of sustainability by promoting energy efficiency, reducing water usage, increasing biodiversity in the school gardens and encouraging community practice in sustainability.

Specific environmental strategies we have in place include:

  • Bringing lunch in recyclable containers
  • Reducing water usage
  • Using technology to limit our paper usage
  • Reduction of waste and litter
  • Improving our outdoor environment

A health-promoting school is a place where all members of the school community work together to provide students with integrated and positive experiences and structures that promote and protect their health. World Health Organization, 1996.

Food preferences are established early in life and schools are an important setting for influencing the food habits of children as approximately 37 per cent of a child’s total energy intake is consumed at school. Key factors in the development of a child’s food preferences and eating behaviours are food availability and accessibility. We aim therefore, to create a health promoting environment where we can support children to make good food choices. We do not allow confectionery in children’s lunchboxes. We do not use confectionery as a reward. Due to food intolerances and allergies, please check with your child’s class teacher before arranging any birthday treats.
